This is the final week of my "Running for Jesus" campaign and it has been the first and craziest fundraiser ever. I've had to deal with lots of problems related to electronics and weather but I've also had lots of good things happen too, like raising almost $400 for the Storehouse for Jesus. The average number of miles that I've run since October 6th is 5.05 miles, which is over my goal of running 5 miles a day from October 6th until December 19th. Even though it only snowed on Sunday, that didn't mean that it wouldn't stick around; there was still 4-5 inches of snow on the ground when a couple of distance runners, including myself, decided to run on some trails behind Vulcan. As you can see in this picture, some spots are slushy like the areas on the right of this picture, while some spots are still solid like the snow on the left. It was harder to run because you were constantly slipping and losing your footing and when it came to going up and down hills, it was an adventure. Even though everyone was cold and wet after we finished our run, the thrill of running in the snow was well worth it.
This winter weather was a major obstacle for me because it forced me to stay inside to run because of all the snow and sleet but I pressed on because I was determined to not miss a single day of running. Missing just a day or 2 of running or working out can disrupt your entire schedule and can cause someone to fall behind. This project was lots of fun but was also a lot of hard work; even though I won't meet mt goal of raising $500, I will have about 80% of that goal to give to the Storehouse before the end of the 1st semester. These are the times for Friday, December 15th- Wednesday, December 19th (the last week isn't a full week): Saturday, December 15th- Free Run / 5.31 miles / 49:30 minutes Sunday, December 16th- Free Run / 5.19 miles / 46:12 minutes Monday, December 17th- JDL Track Meet + Recovery Run / 5.30 miles / JDL Track Meet- 6:24 minutes + Recovery Run- 58:55 minutes Tuesday, December 18th- Free Run / 5.24 miles / 46:35 minutes Wednesday, December 19th- Hard Workout + Recovery Run / 5.17 miles / Workout- 45:23 minutes + Recovery Run- 32:19 minutes This week has had the craziest weather yet, mid sixties on Monday and mid thirties on Wednesday afternoon. We also had our first snow on Wednesday at about 4:00PM, right as winter track practice was starting. It didn't last very long but it was still exciting to do our warm up lap around Davie in the snow and experience the thrill of running in another kind of odd weather that you typically don't see many people running in. This is a picture of the clouds that brought this weather after it had stopped snowing. On Friday, December 7th, distance runners got to experience our first indoor track meet of this season and we had lots of fun. We tried our best and even though we didn't win many events, we did manage to win some, such as shot-put and the 300 meter sprint. One of the last events at the meets is the 2 mile race; I did this race one time last year and I had to do 17 laps instead of 16 because my counter forgot what number of laps I had left. That didn't happen this time and Jesus (Hey Zeus) did really well and completed this race in about 13:25. This is also one of the most competitive races for good distance runners because it's the longest race in indoor track. For once, I was forced to run inside on the treadmill this morning after a very powerful winter storm dumped close to a foot of snow in the very early morning hours on Sunday, December 9th. As you can see in this photo, the snow piled up on everything in sight, including trees, railings, fence-posts and tables. Running in this would've been close to impossible so I stayed inside to run but I still ran just over five miles. I will most likely have to run on my own on Monday, Tuesday and maybe even Wednesday because of this winter storm.
These are the times for Saturday, December 8th- Friday, December 14th: Saturday, December 8th- Free Run / 5.30 miles / 49:02 minutes Sunday, December 9th- Free Run / 5.18 miles / 46:50 minutes Monday, December 10th- Free Run / 5.38 miles / 50:31 minutes Tuesday, December 11th- Free Run / 5.19 miles / 48:02 minutes Wednesday, December 12th- Free Run / 5.25 miles / 47:22 minutes Thursday, December 13th- Hard Workout + Recovery Run / 5.21 miles / Workout- 30:00 + Recovery- 22:10 minutes Friday, December 14th- Free Run / 5.11 miles / 52:45 minutes This is a picture of what my car said was the temperature outside after practice on Tuesday, November 27th. When practice began that day, the temperature was probably in the mid thirties but by the time I got done at around 5:00, it was in the low forties. If the weather before practice is too cold or if it is raining, our warm up is running around Davie 1 time. If it's warmer and not raining, our warm up is running 800 meters around the track, which is only 2 laps. Our meets are every 1.5-2 weeks and they are inside at an indoor track "stadium" in Winston called the JDL. I'm planning on running either the 800 or the mile, as well as the 2 mile if I have to. During a race, it seems like so much longer because the length of the track loop is only 200 meters each instead of 400 meters like the Davie track. Last year, I ran the 2 mile and ran an extra lap because my counter miscounted my number of laps; I ended up running around the track 17 times instead of 16.
Some of the Davie runner's training includes more than just everyday practices; it also includes running in certain events and/or 5K's every once and a while. The track meets are always fun and there are much more events to watch besides juts running, like shot-put, hurdles and sprinter events, like the 200 and 400 meter races. These meets are always inside so if it's freezing outside, it won't matter because we'll be inside, which is convenient. I plan on competing in cross-country and winter track for all 4 years of high school and I might even consider competing in college. I am going to run every day and try to improve my 5K time to be under 20 minutes; right now, my best is 22:32. These are the times for Saturday, December 1st-Friday, December 7th: Saturday, December 1st- Free Run / 5.14 miles / 41:55 minutes Sunday, December 2nd- Free Run / 5.19 miles / 42:33 minutes Monday, December 3rd- Hard Workout + Recovery Run / 5.12 miles / Workout- 35:02 minutes + Recovery- 21:19 minutes Tuesday, December 4th- Free Run / 5.09 miles / 39:42 minutes Wednesday, December 5th- Hard Workout + Recovery Run / 5.14 miles / Workout- 38:10 minutes + Recovery- 21:18 minutes Thursday, December 6th- Free Run / 5.21 miles / 39:40 Friday, December 7th- JDL Track Meet + Recovery Run / 5.01 miles / Meet- 6:24 + Recovery- 31:20 minutes I have been recording my total miles and time for every day that I've ran and I started recording on October 6th after I ran a cross-country meet at "Hagen Stone Park". I was keeping track of all of my results on a sheet of notebook paper and now, I decided to create a document online because it's easier and I don't have to worry about losing it. I've only had 3 days in which I ran under 5 miles and those days were "4.80, 4.90 and 4.95 miles", but it didn't really affect my average mileage that much because on most of the other days, I ran for more than 5 miles so it evens out. Running this much isn't as hard as some people think and I think the #1 reason that people think it's hard is because they've never done it before so they just assume that I'm crazy for running for about 5 miles every day for 3 months. These are both pictures that show the list of my running dates, times and distances from October 6th until today, November 25th. Unfortunately, I only have about 1/3 of my $500 goal, mainly because people have just been donating just to help out and not really noticing how much I've ran. I am going to have to step up my strategy ideas so more people will start to donate. My plan is to surprise the Storehouse and I plan to record their reaction(s). I only have about $160 but if more people will donate, I could reach $500 in no time. Even if I don't reach $500, I'll at least have something to give them. If I can get everyone in my classes to donate $1-$2, I could possibly get over $75, which is a lot for only a few teenagers.
These are the times for Saturday, November 24th-Friday, November 30th: Saturday, November 24th- Free Run / 5.23 miles / 52:01 Sunday, November 25th- Free Run / 5.14 miles / 53:21 Monday, November 26th- Free Run / 5.30 miles / 51:50 Tuesday, November 27th- Free Run / 5.20 miles / 47:32 Wednesday, November 28th- Free Run / 5.12 miles / 47:34 Thursday, November 29th- Workout + Recovery Run / 5.23 miles / Workout- 32:12 + Recovery Run- 22:19 Friday, November 30th- Free Run / 5.21 miles / 43:20 On Saturday, November 17th, I competed in the Turkey Derby 5K in Bermuda Run at 9:00 AM. When I ran this race last year, I placed 10th out of 220-230 people and I thought that was pretty good.I was recognized twice for being the top third male finisher and finishing third in my division, which was 14-16 year old runners. It was a lot of fun and both this year and last, I got a picture standing in front of the background for the race sponsors. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the thrill of both having fun and seeing friends of mine who got to see how good of a runner I am. This is a picture of the sheet that is showing the overall times for the first 61 finishers. These runners were all different ages and all got under 30 minute 5K times, which is pretty good for some of them. If you look at the top 10 and look closely enough, you can see that I placed 2nd overall with a time of 00:22:31:59, which is just 22:32. The winner of the Turkey Derby this year is a freshman at Davie named Andrew Brown, who ran cross-country with me and is currently running winter track with me as well. He beat me by 2:16 and was ahead of everyone by the first 1/4 mile and after that, I never saw him again until I finished. I placed 2nd overall and I moved into the 2nd place position after the first 1/2 mile. There were a total of 450 runners, ranging from 7 and under, to close to 70 years old. Every time I turned a corner during the race, I kept looking behind me to see how close the top 5-10 runners were behind me. When I turned the corner at the 2 mile marker and kept running without getting any water, I turned around to see if they were doing the same' they weren't so I had to pick up the pace and ended up still claiming 2nd place overall. These were the top 3 male finishers and ironically, the top 3 finishers overall as well. From left to right, these guys are Andrew Brown (1st place), Nathaniel Haskin (me:2nd place) and Andrew Wild (3rd place). Andrew Brown beat me by over 2 minutes, but I barely beat Andrew Wild, only finishing less than 10 seconds ahead of him. This race is a lot of fun; everyone is so cheerful and it's always the right temperature, not to mention all the food that they set up for after everyone finishes. My brother and my dad are planning to run this race with me next year and it's possible for the 3 of us to get top 3 next year. My personal goal for next year is to get 1st place because there's only 1 position better than second and that is 1st!
These are the times from Saturday, November 17th- Friday, November 23rd: Saturday, November 17th- Turkey Derby 5K / 3.1 miles / 22:31:59 Sunday, November 18th- Free Run / 5.10 miles / 49:22 Monday, November 19th- Free Run / 5.09 miles / 49:02 Tuesday, November 20th- Free Run / 5.15 miles / 53:44 Wednesday, November 21st- Free Run / 5.12 miles / 52:50 Thursday, November 22nd- Free Run / 5.20 miles / 54:23 Friday, November 23rd- Free Run / 5.09 miles / 49:49 There weren't any big races this week but the weather was chillier than it has been for the past 5-6 weeks. The high for this week never reached more than 65 degrees and on the long weekend, I ran between 8 and 9 Am when it was 40-45 degrees. I'm going to have to bring more and more warmer gear to practices now because fall is starting to become a lot colder and winter is fast approaching. I am running in the Turkey Derby on Saturday, November 17th and this is a 5K in Bermuda Run and is usually in the early morning so I have to be there by 7-7:30 so I can get all the information I need before the race starts. This will be my 3rd time running in this race and I always enjoy it because their isn't all the pressure that a cross-country meet might put on you because it is just a friendly race for the whole community to enjoy. The first time I ran in this race was in 8th grade when I was in the GoFar club and I remember having to sprint to try to beat another guy during the last 100 meters and he beat me by a few feet. I vowed to return and during my freshman year last year, I entered by myself and ended up beating my 5K record by almost a minute and placing 10th overall out of 250-260 people, which I thought was pretty good, even thought a good portion of the runners were either really young or older I claimed 2 different prizes: 1 for being the top 3rd boy finisher and my 2nd being from placing 2nd in my age division. This year, I don't know who all will be there but I do bet that their will be some good runners from schools all over Forsyth, Winston and Advance because this is a pretty well-known race. I also went to Stokesdale Church to help out with a soup dinner on Saturday, November 10th and I got 4 people who were willing to donate $30 towards my running campaign, bring my estimated total to almost $250, which is practically halfway to my goal of raising $500 for the Storehouse for Jesus. This is a picture of 1 of my workout times that I recorded with my FitBit; it shows how far I ran and how long it took me to run that far. I ran from 1 entrance of Oak Valley to the other and it is about 2.5 miles when you are halfway. I ran at about a 7:35 average miles pace which is pretty good.
These are the times for Saturday, November 10th- Friday, November 16th: Saturday, November 10th- Free Run / 5.02 miles / 38:16 Sunday, November 11th- Free Run / 5.09 miles / 40:12 Monday, November 12th- Free Run / 5.11 miles / 42:31 Tuesday, November 13th- Hard Workout + Free Run / 5.19 miles / Workout- 44:00 + Free Run- 20:00 Wednesday, November 14th- Free Run / 4.95 miles / 59:14 Thursday, November 15th- Free Run / 5.11 miles / 47:20 Friday, November 16th- Free Run / 5.08 miles / 46:02 These are the 3 Davie runners that made it to states this year: Clay Summers (far left), Trey Raisback (middle), and Emerson Frantz (far right). Clay and Trey are both seniors while Emerson is a junior but all 3 of these students are incredible athletes and amazing runners. Clay's time was 16:42 (new PR), Trey's time was 17:15 (not a PR but still an absolutely amazing time) and Emerson with 20:06 (very close to her PR). The team made cardboard heads of these 3 students and we carried them around while we ran all around the course cheering them on every second of the race. This is the beginning of the girl's 4A race, which is a race with the "best of the best" and we were fortunate enough this year to have 3 athletes who made it to this race. The girl who you can see in front on the right in the dark green jersey is a girl named Carmen from Pinecrest, who would/will eventually become the girl's 4A State Champion of 2018 and winning by almost 30 seconds ahead of the 2nd place girl. In this race, Emerson placed between 35th and 40th position which is actually pretty good for her. Other teams that deserve an honorable mention include West Forsyth, Reagan and Reynolds. The 4A and 2A races were in the morning of November 3rd and the 1A and 3A races were that afternoon at Beeson Park in Kernersville. The champion for this race got a time of around 17:30 which is a fast pace of about 5:50-5:55 for each mile. This is about 800 meters (0.5 mile) into the 4A boy's race at Beeson Park in Kernersville with the top runners in dark green (Pinecrest), as well as other jerseys that are purple, Carolina blue and white (Reynolds). The fastest time for this race was 15:50, which is an average mile split pace of about 5:16-5:17, which is a really fast and amazing pace. All of these athletes came from all across North Carolina and they all deserve to be recognized on making it this far!
These are the times and distances for Saturday, November 3rd- Friday, November 9th: Saturday, November 3rd- Free Run / 5.01 miles / 39:51 Sunday, November 4th- Free Run / 5.04 miles / 38:02 Monday, November 5th- Free Run / 5.43 miles / 46:18 Tuesday, November 6th- Free Run / 5.12 miles / 41:11 Wednesday, November 7th- Free Run / 5.25 miles / 45:00 Thursday, November 8th- Free Run / 5.01 miles Friday, November 9th- Free Run / 5.08 / 48:44 On Saturday October 27th, Davie County competed in the regional cross-country race at Beeson Park in Kernersville. The top 5 teams, top 10 overall of both boys and girls, and the top 7 individuals who aren't on a team all qualified for states and this year, that includes 3 Davie cross-country runners. We had 2 boy qualifiers:Clay Summers and Trey Raisback. Other honorable mentions include Braxton, Nate, Jackson, Parker and Sean. This was the Boy's varsity team right before they raced and it was a very cold day and the course was not in it's best shape ever, as I was informed by almost every member of the boys and the girls teams. Davie Girls! We also had 1 girl qualify for States: Emerson Frantz. Other girl honorable mentions include Brooke, Paige, Georgia, Abby, Sydney and Heidi. These young ladies tried their best against 18 other teams across our region of North Carolina but sadly, both the Davie boys and girls teams did not qualify as a team so we only have individuals going to States. This picture is all of the girls teams lined up at the starting line and if you can't see the Davie girls, they are all the way on the left of this picture in Box 1, which is about the best position on the line because you have a straight shot through the first 100 meters. This is a picture of the beginning of the boy's race, with the top runners from Pinecrest in the green and Paige in the red. After the first 1.5-2 miles, Reynolds took over the #1 and #2 spots but was soon followed by Paige and Reagan. These top 10 finishers were all from Reagan, Reynolds, Davie and West Forsyth. This is a picture from the beginning of the girl's race, with the top runners being from Pinecrest in the dark green, and Paige in the red again, but closely followed by West Forsyth in the lime green jerseys. The top 10 finishers were all from West Forsyth, Paige, Reagan, Reynolds and Davie. These are the times and distances for Saturday, October 27th- Friday, November 2nd: Saturday, October 27th- Free Run / 5.03 miles / 41:23 Sunday, October 28th- Free Run / 5.09 miles / 42:48 Monday, October 29th- Free Run / 5.05 miles / 40:08 Tuesday, October 30th- Free Run / 5.01 miles / 38:49 Wednesday, October 31st- Free Run / 5.11 miles / 40:33 Thursday, November 1st- Free Run: 5.02 miles / 41:37 Friday, November 2nd- Free Run / 5.07 miles / 42:50 This week’s weather has finally started to cool down dramatically and is finally starting to show signs of fall but sadly, it also means the winding down of my cross country season for this year. I ran my last race on October 17th at Beeson Park in Kernersville. I ran my last race in 24:28 while our top boy runner, Clay, ran his last Conference meet in 16:59, which shows just how fast he is compared to me. My average times for the 3 5K’s this season were about 24 minutes which isn’t that bad for my personal achievement goal(s). This weekend, I will begin to work on my posters and flyers so I can hand them up and post them up all over my community and hopefully Davie as well.
I will also be working on finishing my website so that if there are people who want to look at my background information, I can tell them about my website and that way, they can see for themselves. Even though cross-country is drawing to a close, that doesn’t mean that I won’t continue to train for winter and spring track(s), as well as cross-country next year during summer and early fall. I will hopefully be helping Baylor with running distance when winter track starts so that way both him and myself can both train at the same time. I’ve heard of some great runners that will be freshman next school year, including some from Ellis who were on the track team when I was in 8th grade and I ran distance. I already have made about $100 from some people at my parent’s works, as well as some local churches who were happy to donate;I’ve even had someone donate a certain amount of money for every month that I have/will run. These are the times for Saturday, October 20th- Friday, October 26th: Saturday, October 20th- Hard Workout + Free Run / 5.00 miles / Hard Workout: 45:00 + Free Run: 36:36 Sunday, October 21st- Free Run / 5.05 miles / 39:51 Monday, October 22nd- Free Run / 5.02 miles / 41:42 Tuesday, October 23rd- Free Run / 5.07 miles / 43:59 Wednesday, October 24th- Free Run / 5.00 miles / 39:50 Thursday, October 25th- Free Run / 5.12 miles / 44:11 Friday, October 26th- Free Run / 5.14 miles / 50:01 |
